Joe’s Garage is one of New Plymouth’s most vibrant and loved café-restaurants. We operate 7 days a week with shifts typically finishing by 10pm, ensuring a great work-life balance.
This role supports our Head Chef and senior kitchen staff in delivering high-quality meals and maintaining excellent kitchen standards. You will work in a guest-facing, fast-paced kitchen environment that values attention to detail, cleanliness, and consistency.
Key Responsibilities
Examine ingredients and food items to ensure quality and freshness.
Prepare food, including dishes for guests with special dietary requirements.
Cook and season meals according to our menu and quality standards.
Regulate the temperature of ovens, grills, and other cooking equipment.
Portion food, plate meals neatly, and apply sauces/garnishes for service.
Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment at all times.
Wash dishes and support general kitchen cleanliness as needed.
Store food in temperature-controlled environments and rotate stock.
May assist in menu planning, estimating food requirements, and training apprentices or new kitchen staff.
Skills and Experience Required
Qualification: A NZQF Level 4 Certificate in Cookery (or overseas equivalent).
Experience: At least 6 months’ experience working in a commercial kitchen.
Attributes:
Punctual, proactive, and reliable.
Energetic and physically fit.
Able to follow instructions, multitask, and perform under pressure.
Availability: Able to work a rotating roster including weekends, weekdays, and evening shifts.
What We Offer
Guaranteed minimum 30 hours per week.
Pay rate between $24.00 – $26.00 per hour, depending on experience and performance.
